[Blindtlk] about LWSB

Yes, that's right. I don't remember what Jeff did but I do remember that he
worked there and that they lived off campus and would walk home together
after school.
Wow! That brings back such memories. I remember my counselor's name was
Harold I think. There was a woman counselor there with an accent and her
name was coin Lyons. She married the chief supervisor of the dorms, his name
was Pat Lyons. I'll never forget that man as long as I live. He was a gruff
man but I liked him quite a bit. I think the only person I truly disliked
there was a man named Cecil who was the night watchman.
There were certainly problems and they didn't run things the way that I
might have but...hey, I'm not in charge and nobody is beating down my door
to put me in that position. LOL.
I have become more tolerant of people and the differences between us all
than I was when I was younger. I am not a push over but I can ignore more
than I used too. I don't have to always be right and I don't believe that my
way of thinking and my way of doing things is a code that everyone should
subscribe to. What is it they say: different strokes for different folks.
I'm sure that some people have benefited greatly from the Lions World
programs and some have not.
I know a guy who took the same TSR class that I did and he worked for the
IRS for 20 something years and retired so the program worked well for him.
Had I not been so set in my ways and allowed my indignation to rule over my
common sense, I might have remained with Irs until I could have retired.
Hindsight is awesome! Now that foresight thing? I have had a little trouble
with. LOL.

I do remember her. I think her name was Johnette, and her husband worked
there as well. His name was Jeff, I think.
After thinking about it, while I don't remember being forced to see the
psychiatrist, I do remember all the students making jokes about him, so he
must have had some prominent role in our experience. His name was Dr. Cobb,
I think.

Hey Diane, Do you remember the math instructor Jana Weisman? I think that
was her name.
She was always a hoot.
I do remember the strictness. I remember one time I took my pillow down to
the solarium to watch TV and I got in trouble for it. I really got in
trouble when I took the handbook to the administration and showed them that,
nowhere in the handbook did it say we were prohibited from taking our
pillows down to the solarium. Man they were mad. That still makes me
chuckle.
I don't remember going to the psychologist or psychiatrist but I remember
some students had to do that.
I remember my IRS instructor Margaret Hooper buying me a carton of
cigarettes for a Christmas present.
The male IRS instructor, I think his name was Arthur Peabody but I'm not
sure, would take us to church on Sunday mornings.

Hi Guys,
I attended Lions World twice, both of them back in the 80s. The first time I
was in a secretarial training program, and the second time was a basic
medical transcription course. It has been so long ago, that I honestly don't
recall whether or not I was forced to talk to a psychiatrist, but I do
remember that the center had a very strict policy against staff members
"fraternizing" with the students.
One of my instructors was constantly getting in trouble, because she
developed friendships with myself and other students and wanted to get
together with us after hours. There was definitely a message sent to the
students that "we are above you. You are second class. We are the
authorities." The funny thing about that though was that the blind
instructors, what few there were, got in much less trouble for things like
that than did the sighted instructors. Most of the instructors were sighted
though.

Can't think of any reason why they'd send Ray to a psychiatrist. On the
other foot, perhaps they were just trying to keep him on his toes. Still,
you have to tread lightly with such matters as some people have fairly
sensitive skin underfoot. At the same time, you can hardly walk 'round the
issues indefinitely. I dunno though, I just can't put my foot on any
plausible cause for concern here.
*grin*
LWSB pretty consistently continues to garner a reputation for being a bunch
of sighted people who want us to know how awful it is to be blind, if
nothing else. That alone suggests to me all I need to know about the
organization.

for the blind. Did you know that it's mandatory to see the psychiatrist
just because you're blind there? They still have the most backwards
philosophy about blindness I ever had anything to do with. I'm not talking
from what somebody else told me; rather, I'm talking from actual personal
experience.
