[Blindtlk] Lions World career training

Hi Jessica,

Mind you, I was there 20+ years ago, but back then, the IRS training courses were a fairly serious, no-nonsense program with high expectations. Again, it may have changed. But as I remember it, you had to be chosen for the program by an actual group of IRS employers. You went through an interview process, and basically had a job before every entering the training. I don't think the instruction was given by actual lions world employees. I mean, I'm sure they were paid for their time, and worked closely with Lions World, but I think they were kind of off to themselves, and may have been IRS employees. If that is something that you are interested in, you might check it out.

If you were going for the blindness skills training, or any of the other training programs, then I would certainly say no. But if the IRS program is of interest, I would say check it out and see if you can deal with the other craziness along the way.

Again, I don't know how this program works now. Since I was there, they have had federal hiring freezes and so forth, and I have known of some IRS employees who have been cut due to downsizes, so I don't know what they're doing now.

I have heard all about the coddling attitude for blindness training, but is
there more respect during the IRS program provided? Is that worth looking
into or not?

I meant to ask this question a while back but never got around to it. this
discussion about jobs reminded me.

Back in 1985 through 1987 I attended Lions World which was then Arkansas
Enterprises for the Blind. The first time I attended I took the college prep
course. The second time I took the Customer Service Representative class. I
was placed in Dallas with the IRs but I left the job because I did not agree
with the way things were being done. I was young and foolish and many times
I have thought back on my leaving IRs and have wished I had not made that
mistake but I did and it was done.

I have recently thought about trying to go back to Lions World for the
computer training courses but right now I have a lucrative job so I'm not
that worried about it. However, I love working with computers so training in
this field is something I might consider more over the next few months.

What is the general consensus regarding Lions World now? Does anyone have
recent experience with this training facility?

Although there were some problems when I attended back in the 80's, I can
say that the overall experience was not so bad and it might be an option for
those who are looking for employment in the future but I don't know how well
it is being operated now.
