[Blindtlk] Fw: [Nfbf-l] Erik Weihenmeyer on ExpeditionImpossible

The comments by Gary, David, and Diane are doing a lot to make me
further consider joining the NFB. I'm glad most of the people
here are open to differing ways of dealing with the Federation.

 Hi,

I really need our moderator's help here, because I am really
having to put
a tight rein on my fingers. You have every right to your own
opinions,
however misguided they might be, But your comments are
inappropriate. If
you knew anything about the scholarship program you would know
that they
aren't all "3k" scholarships. David isn't "smoking" anything.
He has a
right to his opinion, his kinder, much more mature opinion, and
your
comment to him was beyond inappropriate..

And we didn't put all of our money on him. We still have money
left to
make other investments, some of which will come back to us In
huge
dividends. I was in a room full of former scholarship winners
this past
summer, who were drawn to the federation by similar investments.

And... if Erik one day realizes that he has more power with us
than
without us, we'll still be here, and will be eager to put him to
work.

 hi,

ok, maybe con isn't the right word but he had wealth in the
family and
 had
travelled to multiple countries to ascend other mountains.
sounds
 similar
to playing the stock market. would you put all of your money on
one
 single
 stock, i don't think so.

He didn't CON us out of anything. He asked for our help. He
was involved
in a project, had taken on a feat that would, when accomplished,
make an
unshakable statement about the equality of the blind. We aren't
just
 here
to help our members. We are here to benefit all of the blind,
so we
weren't being conned. The very sad thing though is that he
didn't choose
to keep that partnership going. He got what he needed from us,
and now
 he
is choosing to go on by himself.

I think it is extremely audacious that he things that, in order
to give
 us
his time, he can make demands about where he will sit on the
agenda, the
amount of time he will be given, and demand that the entire
convention
 be
sitting at attention throughout his speech. As someone said
yesterday,
 Dr.
Maurer does not always get the kind of time that Erik is
requesting/demanding in order to grace us with his presence.
And, very
sadly, Dr. Maurer doesn't always get the level of respect and
attendance
from the convention that Erik is demanding.

But we weren't conned. We made an investment which was
guaranteed to
change the way the world saw blindness and that we hoped would
come back
to us in the form of a dedicated Federationist. Unfortunately
the second
part of that return hasn't happened.

 Actually Cindy we are not.

But I am sure nothing is going to change your mind about that.
I am
 sure
that people who personally know me as well know this as well.

Erik, feels the way he feels!

His father feels the way he feels, but at the same time, the
only way
 they
are going to learn is from attending.

I am not going to push the issues at all.

I did post items on our list that pertain to other disabilities
as in a
question to others, when we pass accessibility laws for us, they
affect
everyone including those that are not blind.

I met Dr. Scott Raines at the Convention, he is a paraplegic,
that
 works
with the US and international disability community in travel.
He also
 help
 create bookshare.

We are working together meaning, if I need help with travel
experience
 in
other countries in the way of accessibility and I don't know I
ask him,
and at the same time it helps to advocate as a blind person as
well, he
came to us at convention and was told by former President Don
Gilmore
 to
reach out to me because of me working to promote advocacy in the
travel
 industry for the blind.

So, should we not allow other people with disabilities not come
to our
convention to learn about us and what we do, that is what it
seems.

Only way we are going to become more knowledgeable about one
another is
 to
 learn from one another.

Please do not take this as being crude or rude, which I am not
being at
 all, just making a point.

I think we're coming from different places in our philosophy,
Cheryl.
 I
believe in the abilities of *blind* people. I believe that
given the
 proper
training and opportunity, we can compete on an equal basis with
our
 sighted
neighbors. I also believe that the NFB exists to promote that
 philosophy
and fight for the rights of blind people whenever necessary.

I don't believe that all other disabilities have a place in the
work
 that
the NFB is doing. We're blind and we know the challenges and
barriers
 we're
faced with on a daily basis. We are not all in wheelchairs or
facing
 other
challenges. There are other organizations to champion people
with
 other
disabilities. Beyond the fact that we are not experts in those
areas,
financially, it would be prohibitive to take on all challenges.

So, until Eric comes to the place where he recognizes that he's
a
 blind
person and the reason he was able to accomplish what he has is
in some
 part
due to the work of the National Federation of the Blind, we may
not be
 ready
to jump at an opportunity to give him the prime audience his
father
 believes
 he deserves.

 Cindy
