[Blindtlk] NFB Blood Drive

Hello Steve and everyone,

I used to donate blood at a local church and whenever the Massasoit
Community College in Brockton Massachusetts held their blood drives. I also
gave at a number of other sites when blood drives were held in Massachusetts
and in Austin Texas. This was before I was put on seizure medication so am
no longer able to donate. Mary gives regularly through her work.

Holding a community service project such as a blood drive at our
national convention is a visible way for the public to learn that the blind
like others want to give back to their communities in many ways including
assisting with the preservation of human life. From reading Gary's message
it sounds like they were short of volunteers when the drive was held in
Louisville in the early 1000's. Perhaps the Community Service Group could
assist in the recruitment of volunteers to assist donors with the paperwork.
Braille copies of the material could be produced to allow interested
individuals to read over prior to donating. If we can put a blind person
behind the stearing wheel of a car on the track at Daytona, an idea that
includes its own share of liabilities but was done successfully almost a
year ago we ought to be able to find ways to address the issues so future
blood drives at the national convention and at other affiliate events can be
successful.

But, there's nothing stopping you from doing something at a local level
which might be a good place to start.

Hello Chris and everyone,

You most definitely need to run all activities to occur during NFB events by

Dr. Maurer. I know this from bitter experience and remind others to be sure
he's in the loop when planning NFB event activities. So yes holding another
blood drive at a national convention would need his stamp of approval before

the event can occur. All the best.

I think you would have to get approval from Dr. Maurer to run an
event such as this at national convention. But I don't know for
sure; can a division run an event at national convention without
having to get approval from Dr. Maurer? And, Mike, what do you
think his answer would be?

If I were you guys, first thing I'd do would be to ask Dr.
Maurer. I think I
know what his answer would be.

Hi Peter,

I know Darian, but I don't think he is on this list. I forwarded
your message to him. I also sent it to the Community Service
division, as they might be interested in taking this project on.

Good evening again everyone,

I believe it was at either the 2003 or the 2005 national
convention that
a blood drive was held. Mary gave blood during that convention.
As I recall
Gary Wunder headed up this convention activity. There have not
been any
blood drives at our national convention since that one and I
never found out
why.

Since we've entered the age of community service and have a
group that
could manage this project perhaps this is something we should
start again
particularly in light of the recent problems blind donors faced
when
attempting to give blood. I sure hope Darrien Smith reads this.
Perhaps our
local chapters and state affiliates could conduct similar blood
drives. This
is another way to combat discrimination against the blind and do
community
service at the same time.
