Thanks Sherry and Marion,

I really appreciate this information. I have wondered about this a lot. I really wanted to be sure before I decided to give a dog a try, because I didn't want to be responsible for wasting a lot of money if it didn't work out.

Diane,
You ask a very valid question. I will do my best to answer it. Should a
person receive a guide dog and, for any reason, the dog does not work out,
the dog is returned to the training program to be matched with another user.
Sometimes matches do not work out! My wife's second dog was what is commonly
referred to as a retread, as was my second guide. I know her dog's handler
got a second dog after he returned his first. I received my second dog when
he was about four years old and he worked with me until he was nearly 15.
Another thing you might consider is "test driving" a guide dog during
convention. Several training programs bring trained dogs that have not yet
been matched with a handler and let people see what it's like to work a
guide dog. Some guide dog users might also let you try out their dog. I used
to do this with my previous guide, Louiza, but wouldn't chance it with my
current guide! Sarge is a handful and I would only let someone who is a very
experienced handler (and very strong) work him! HTH!

Marion

.
