[Blindtlk] The Green Briar Resort

First of all WV sound wonderful. There are a number of considderations to keep in mind as we plan conventions. Even if we get superb rates at the resort, you need to be able to get to it. You will note that our conventions have been, at least in the last forty years, in cities with good air connections.

Secondly, size. One facility needs to house all the meetings. This year, we used two hotels. We used one convention location. This makes meeting planning and attendance easier.

Food needs to be fairly available. The last time I remember this being a major problem was in Dallas in '98. The hotel had two restaurants. They were always full. In fact, three guest speakers used the Yogi Barra quote, "Nobody goes to that restaurant any more, it's too crowded," in their presentation.

Now about the dates. We do get better rates over the fourth. Those of us who work have a better chance to get that time off, since we will not be working (most of us) at least one day during the period. Last but not least is the cost of getting to convention. Smaller non-connecting airports are more expensive, I can, for example, decide to fly into Madison WI, which is 35 miles from my home, and it will only cost me around $100.00 to $150.00 more, each way, than going to Chicago, and flying out of there. There are parts of the country that just do not give good rates. The Pacific Northwest would be nice, but I doubt we'd get rates that time of the year in Seattle or Portland. People want to go there.

I don't know if this helps or not, but I thought I'd put my oar in the water. Where ever we are, I'll probably be there. I never seem to have time for site seeing anyway.

Hi Peter and Everyone:

There is plenty to do in West Virginia. I am a West Virginian smile. I am from Morgantown the home of West Virginia University and the Mountaineers!

I've never actually been to the Green Brier resort but there is plenty to do. There is great white water rafting. There is fishing. There is zip-lining, and rock climing. There is boating/kayaking, and you can see/tour many historic sites. The Green Brier is a very famous place that really attracts tourists every year. Though I've never actually been to it I believe there is shopping and such as well in the area.
I've been told it's a beautiful place/area. There is a lot of beauty in the mountains of West Virginia.

If you want a big city, Pittsburgh, PA is nearby. Also, West Virginia is famous for the pepperoni roll.

It would be neat to have a convention in WV...wonder how we could make it happen?

I'm going to forward this thread to the NFBWV talk list as well as our state president Charlene Smith and first vice president Ed McDonald.

Just some thoughts from a proud West Virginian.
