Just for clarification purposes, is Olympus a company
spesifically for the blind or is it for the sighted with voice
TTS guidance? On the ones without the voice guidance, does it
have a Braille display? Thanks!

hi,
i called olympus today and found the ws series like the ws710
with fm radio
does not have the voice guidance feature.
only the ds models such as ds30, 40, 50 and ds410, 420, 510, 520,
610 and
620 will have the speech announced.
if you can find them, the ds30 would be the cheapest one.

Dear All,
You can find many of these units at the (ILA) Independent Living
Aids web
site and in their catalog as well as Maxiaids catalog too. Also
Radio
Shack
carries the Olympus brands as well.
I had a very simple digital recorder, that did not talk, but was
very
simple
to use and run that I bought from the Utah affiliate some years
ago, that
was silver and red and I paid $15.00 for it.
It worked very well and I used it for years, but at last it has
bit the
dust
and gone to that great graveyard for electronics in the sky.
My Olympus DM 520 cost $120.00 but has voice guided menus and is
not hard
to
use.
I hope this helps.

Hi Nikki,
Does yours include speech to operate the controls if you choose?
When I
searched the site, I found one that was a 5000 but not a 520.
They have a
ton of them but only the 4000, didn't check completely all, had
definite
speech and was supposed to be for blind and dyslexic folks.
That
particular
one even read DAISY books. That particular one is $299. I hate
to
recommend
this one because of the cost and it didn't seem particularly
simple. Just
too many functions. Of course, most people don't mind all the
functions
but
personally, I think it is time to invent something for seniors
that
really
has just the right amount of capabilities.
Quite frankly, the Victor Stream is the easiest to operate if
one just
wants
most to record. As the person gets a little braver, adding some
music is
possible. It is expensive but because of the larger hands,
hands that
just
don't work as well as they once did might be able to operate it
a bit
more
easily.
Thanks much.
Bonnie

Hello Bonnie,
Go on www.olympusamerica.com and search for DM-520 and you
should be able
to
find a price on it. State Services for the Blind of Minnesota
baught me
mine
for a class I was taking. Sorry I can't be of more help at the
moment,
I'm
getting ready to get off of the computer, I'm getting a
headache. I wish
you
the best of luck finding him a recorder that will work for him.
Sincerely,
Nikki

Do you know how much it cost? I hate to suggest that this man
pay $200
unless it truly is is what would work best. If he could payu
less and
still
get something that would be super easy in the way yours is, that
would be
great.
Also, the thing that I need to keep reminding myself of is that
he is 80
year old and we are a bit younger. He does use the computer,
however,
with
magnification so perhaps he could learn to use a digital
recorder all
right.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Bonnie

Hello Bonnie,
I am visually impaired, and I have an Olympus DM 520 and I can
read the
screen ok, but it also has speech, and tells you the battery
level, and
what
folder you are on and what file you are on. It is super easy to
use. I
love
mine. One thing though, I accidentally got rid of the speech on
mine, and
I
miss that function, and I want to get that back, but I don't
know how.
Well,
I hope that helps.
Sincerely,
Nikki

Subject: [Blindtlk] Simple to use digital recorder
Hello everyone,
I am working at an agency serving blind and visually impaired
folks and I
work particularly with seniors. Recently I spoke with a
gentleman,
minister,
79 years old and still wanting to do his Sunday services. Very
sharp but
cannot read at the pulpit any longer. I suggested recording his
sermons
and
then using a headphone and giving them as he listened through
the
headphone.
I told him that I would recommend a recorder. I went to the
Olympus site
and
there are several for about $50. Most of these were in the 800
series. I
did
not see where any of them had speech and though most of them
said large
font
LCD, I just wanted to know if there is anyone out there who uses
one and
is
visually impaired. How easy is it to read the display. Any
help or ideas
that you might have will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch,
Bonnie Lucas
