Hello, Federationists!

I guess not everyone got the message of the BDC that technology
is available to make most anything accessible to us! I'll throw this in
with the Kindle, the Nook, and all the other techie toys that some entity
chooses to use, even though a more accessible alternative is available.
This Google matter is a perfect example of a time when education isn't
productive; we must proceed with litigation because discriminatory animus is
definitely involved. This is a clear case of someone simply ignoring our
needs!

While I'm venting, I'll inform you that in Des Moines,
Iowa-that's right, the capitol of Tom Harkin's state-the SSA recently moved
its office to a location to which public transportation doesn't go. The SSA
is very proud of the new office because it's "fully accessible". But is it?
How are consumers who don't drive expected to go there independently? The
Des Moines Chapter voted to try to solve this problem, but so far nothing
has changed. I'll be making a trip to Harkin's office before too long, I
think.

Since I have some vision, I'd be letting my Braille skills
lapse. Recently, I've been practicing and I'm amazed at how easy it is to
sort of "relearn"! Everyone with low vision should learn it! I felt kind
of strange Saturday at the Chapter meeting because, while I'm becoming a
fast Braille reader again, I was sitting there taking notes as a sighted
person. Isn't there some kind of Braille note taker out there that's quiet
and fast? I've seen some people use some kind of gadget, but I know nothing
about it. If anyone has experience with anything like this, I'd welcome
your comments.

Sincerely,

Mary
