Hi -- I like the ones with the string best.  They seem a little more 
feeling sensitive and lighter than the ones with the chains.  And, when my 
string came off, I cheated and modified the rubber cap on my string cane 
so that it now holds a chain from my previous cane so I have the best of 
both.  I've been using my chain version because I was thinking the string 
versions aren't made any more.  Maybe I'll go back to my modified string 
cane.
