Stop the Presses!!
We have a special announcement!!
Effective April 1, Newsline R for the Blind will be available in South
Carolina!
What is Newsline?
Newsline is a service developed by the National Federation of the Blind
and
sponsored by the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, which provides
access to over 300 publications, including The State, Charleston Post and
Courier, and soon The Greenville News and Myrtle Beach Sun News using only
a
touchtone phone. The South Carolina Commission for the Blind, is making
it
possible for blind individuals in South Carolina to gain access to the
information in newspapers at the same time as their sighted colleagues,
friends, and family members. Blind professionals, for example, can now
converse on relevant topics, no longer being under informed about
information critical to their professions or left out at social functions
when the latest editorial is discussed. Beyond this, a wealth of
information
primarily found in newspapers is now available to the blind on an equal
footing, making possible their participation in the life of the community
on
the basis of equality.
The service handles thousands of phone calls each day for individuals
across
the country who now access daily newspapers and magazines as never
before.
The toll-free centralized call-in center provides service on demand to
subscribers. This also enables those who cannot read conventional print to
have access to all content offered when traveling throughout the United
States twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
Every day, a subscriber can choose that day's, the previous days, or the
previous Sunday's issue of any newspaper in the service. A user can easily
choose which newspaper, section, and article to read using a standard
touch-tone telephone. The menu provided allows the user to change the
speed
and voice settings, spell out words, or search for a particular word or
subject.
Subscribers can now access television listings through this service. For
the
first time ever, subscribers have independent access to their local TV
listings, all in one place, only a telephone call away.
THE NEW YORKER, THE ECONOMIST, AARP the MAGAZINE, DIABETES
SELF-MANAGEMENT,
GLAMOUR, Mac WORLD, MATILDA ZIEGLER, MEN'S JOURNAL, NARFE MAGAZINE,
PARADE,
PC WORLD, POETS and WRITERS, POPULAR SCIENCE, ROLLING STONE, SCIENCE
NEWS,
SMITHSONIAN, THE NEW REPUBLIC, TIME, USA WEEKEND and US WEEKLY are on
NFB-NEWSLINER.
Through this media, SCCB will be providing access to America's Job Bank,
where our consumers will be able to set up profiles to search for and
apply
for jobs. This will empower our consumers to take a more active role in
their job placement activities.
In addition to the telephone access, there are a variety of options for
accessing available material from the computer and a variety of portable
devices.
