[Blindtlk] Identifying Clothes and organization

Hi Johanna,

The methods I use are fairly simple. One thing I try to do--which obviously isn't written in stone--is not purchase anything that looks/feels exactly like something else that I already have. You know what I mean? I try to make it so that each piece of clothing has a distinctive feature, whether it be the buttons, the cut, the sleeves, a pocket... Something distinguishes it from my other articles of clothing. Using this system, I just remember which color each piece is. I admit though, that my memory is aging, and so this plan isn't as easy to keep straight as it once was.

There are some exceptions to this too. I do have several pairs of pants, and a few shirts/blouses which are identical in the way they feel. For these, I've designed a system which works for me using safety pins. For instance, I have several pairs of pants that are identical by touch, but one is black, one is blue, one is red and the other is brown. In the tag of the blue pair I have placed one safety pin that hangs down off of the bottom of the tag. I have situated the pin so that it is securely situated on the tag, but still has room to hang straight down. The red pair has a pin which is situated horizontally across the tag. The brown pair has two safety pins that are interconnected which hang down from the tag. The black pair has no pin at all.

As for shoes, I again, try not to buy any which are identical in their feel. I generally like to stick with neutral colors for shoes, the blacks, the whites, the browns...

Subject: [Blindtlk] Identifying Clothes and organization

To All:

After hearing of some of the clothing mishaps, which happen to the sighted
and unsighted. I wanted to ask how do you organize your clothes. Trying to
come up with new ideas. Do some of you number your clothes? Use the
braille tags? I myself am visually impaired and is realizing that I should
be more organized in my clothing. At times it is hard to tell the
difference between black, dark brown, and navy. Also knowing what colors
are in prints, plaids, etc. Also I hear that the braille tags do not have
enough of colors. Any suggestions? New Ideas? Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

Johanna
