Dear Christine,
They all are designed to work out of doors, where the receiver can see the
satellites in the sky.
They will sometimes work in rooms that have a thin roof over head, but not
well.
They will not identify steps and stairs in your way. That is what your Long
White Cane or guide dog are for.
You can however, record a route and you could register a (POI) Point of
interest as a warning to you for a reminder that you are approaching some
obstacle, but you would need to do it coming from both directions, going and
coming, to make it work The closest it can get you to a spot is about 30
feet and then you need to use your skills to get the rest of the way. .
They can give you "next turn" information and even a "look around" mode to
tell you about an area or intersection , before you even go there.
They can help you find locations and directions, but you will need to still
use good O and M skills to navigate your way. There really is not a
substitute for good cane or dog skills.
The Trekker Breeze or Captain G.P.S. units are small and very portable and
will give you most of the info you want.
Just keep searching and asking those questions and learn as much as you can
before you invest your money.
Remember, the NFB has a 3% Loan Program for the purchase of technology and
some guide dog schools have programs that not only give you a G.P.S., but
the training to use it along with a guide dog.
You could also approach your local Lion's Club for help in purchasing a unit
as well. I know as I am a Lion.
Someone is working on some way to navigate indoors, but that may be a ways
off yet.
I have G.P.S. on my Braille Note "M" Power and you can get much the same
thing today using an I-Phone app.
Just keep looking and asking those questions and see some demonstrations
when and where you can.
David Evans and GD Jack.
