Mike and Ben,

You guys know, I hope, that I agree with you that we have to realize that
the price of some of the devices we use can't simply be
set based upon what we can afford. There has to be enough profit to allow a
company to provide support and develop their next
products. However, I would raise a red flag that prices tend to be
supported by what rehabilitation will pay, and I sometimes
wonder about products that are sold year after year using the same
technologies and mostly the same physical parts. While I do
not believe that the companies who provide our equipment are putting away
huge profits in Swiss bank accounts, I wonder if the
support given by governments causes them to pay less attention to efficiency
and the design of cheaper products. It should be
acknowledged that prices have come down a good deal over the years for
braille printers, especially if you look at price
reductions together with the decreasing value of the dollar over time, but
our small market together with the role of governments
in purchasing a large percentage of the products produced makes this a
somewhat artificial model.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

that's why there are loan programs made available through organizations like
ours and even private assistive technology
foundations. If we can only get blind people paid fair wages at Goodwill and
other places of employment, we can then pay off
loans, etc. (grin.)

blind who don't work, pay for something like this? Pretty obsurd, if you ask
me.
