Rex, some things are beyond our control and some are not. One thing that is
in our control is how much we want to work and what we'll tolerate to do it.
I am glad you do not use the excuse of a long commute time or the lack of a
transit system for choosing not to work. You have been creative and have
made earning a living a real priority. Thanks from all of us who benefit
from your can-do determination.

I cringe every time I hear someone say "dose of reality" because I have to
ponder what, exactly, that means.

One person's view of reality may differ considerably from another's.

Here is a reality for me: In order for me to get to work, I have to wake up
at 5:45 in order to catch a ride with a church friend. This church friend
takes me to a co-worker's house. I leave my house at around 6:20 and get to
my co-worker's house at around 6:40. I wait for my co-worker until around
7:20 when we leave for work to get here by 7:50. The trip to work from home
should normally take around 35 minutes but because there is no transit where
I live, I have to get to work in two legs of commute.

This is my reality and may not be someone else's.

If someone had told you 30 years ago that people would be walking around
with phones that didn't need a cord connecting them to a wall, would you
have believed it?

If someone had told you, fifteen years ago, that the computer would
revolutionize the world we live in, would you have believed it?

If someone had said, 100 years ago, that it is possible for blind people to
work and contribute to the work force in a significant way, would you have
believed them?

Or, would we have said "we need to temper our dreams with a dose of
reality?"

Granted, there are many things that need revamping and improvement but it
seems to me that time and future have always been the antidote to that
old-favorite-phrase of "dose of reality."
