[Blindtlk] A refreshable Braille display-related idea

At North Carolina State University, Dr. Paul Yung is heading a project
to create a drastically new refreshable Braille display that will be
cost-effective, lighter in weight, and multi-line (as in, full page).
I have had the priveledge of seeing the prototype of the first cell,
which uses hydraulics to raise or lower pins. This project has been in
the process for several years, but having created the first
hydraulic-powered Braille cell, it is only a matter of time before
they have a full-page refreshable Braille display. The individual
cells cost less than individual cells of current refreshable Braille
displays, but I am not sure what the cost difference is. They are
saying it will be affordable, though affordable to one person is not
necessarily affordable to the next person. However, this is a project
in motion. We just have to have patience while they work out all the
kinks and figure out how to connect the cells and all that. It's a
complicated process, but a promising project. I know there was an
article about this some time ago, but I'm not sure where. Maybe
searching for Dr. Yung and NC State will bring something up.

Here's to the future,
Jewel
