[Blindtlk] self-driving car--legislation in California

Good morning everyone,

Not if we insure that a requirement for site to operate these vehicles
is removed. I hope our California Affiliate gets on this when the
promulgation of the specific regulations occurs to insure that the blind
will be able to operate self-driving cars independently. That's what the NFB
is all about. We developed this technology to allow the blind to drive
themselves or to operate a self-driving vehicle. Now it's a matter of
insuring the blind have the opportunity to put this technology to use. This
is no different than what early adopters of travel with a guide dog went
through in the early 20th Century. Changing the prevailing attitudes was the
most difficult obstacle to over-come before guide dog users could enter
public places accompanied by their dogs. It's the same process all over
again with respect to our being able to operate self-driving cars.

Peter Donahue

That weuld be so cool, though, if you didn't have to rely on anyone who
could see. It could make us even more independent than we already are! :)
