Good morning, Julie,
Try resting your hand on your guides, shoulder so as to detect subtle
movements of her body. This method, I use exclusively, while being
guided and not the traditional, grasping of the elbow. No, it isn't
exactly textbook, but what point is there of a textbook when people
are gonna use what their gonna use, anyway. Why not be comfortable as
