[Blindtlk] acb or nfb/best practices

I don't think there's a problem being a member of both. In WI I don't think
the two groups really work together on things, but they both have a presence
here. The NFB mostly works with the public schools and the ACB works with
the adults. We really don't have much of a chapter here of the NFB so I
feel pretty on my own. I am willing to hear suggestions from everyone
because each persons situation is different and I don't like being dictated
to. I don't appreciate being told I have to do something this way because
it worked for a majority of the blind. My previous experinnces, education
and interests all play into what I use. I have always enjoyed working with
the disabled and elderly. Not everything the NFB stands for helps someone
who has lived with sight for most of their lives. Kids or adults with
multiple disabilities--cognitive plus vlind and epilepsy for example cannot
be as independent as most of the NFB philosophy asks. Because I believe
in variety and support for all, I belong to both organizations.

As for what techniques work best, I don't believe anyone can tell you. all
you need to do is gather suggestions and try them yourself. Everyone's
job, abilities are different. I hate the NFB white cane by the way. I like
mine which has a rolling tip. I feel more independent and safe with it. I
love and agree with Julie's email response. I am visually impaired and I
have a toolkit. I use MAGic on the screen with voice for the computer, my
cctv for filling out forms or reading mail and if it's light reading I use
my high powered reading glasses or 10X magnifier. To get places however I
have use the same skills as a totally blind person for the most part
because I cannot scan or otherwise read signs with special equipment. I am
no techie and cannot afford any kind of cellphone, tablet etc., so I don't
know what's going to be of use for me.

Good afternoon. What are some accessible apps to use in an education or
employment setting? I have the ?Pages? app but some parts of it are not
accessible. Is a traditional notetaker still the best option for taking
notes? Thank you.

Hi Sarah
I know my view might not be too popular because I know many people
love mainstream integration, but I think, if you are a braille user a
traditional notetaker is still the best. First, you can type much
faster because you type in contracted braille. You can actually also
do that on an IPhone if you have a braille display with a keyboard,
but I'm also not happy with the word processors, as far as I know
there isn't a really accessible and friendly office solution for blind
people. Also the calendar. You can use the IPhone calander, but I
think the blind notetaker ones are much faster, so it is better for
education because you can put dates of assignments and things much
faster.

Yes, I agree with Judy, you must try to get to a convention, particularly a
national convention. You will meet all kinds of people and probably hear
about all kinds of alternative techniques those of us who are blind use and
come back feeling really stimulated. It's fun, it's informative,
life-changing.

our video

Hello to all NVDA users,

We are making a video to help promote the work we do, and we would love
NVDA users all over the world to take part. If you, or someone you know,
has had their life greatly enhanced by NVDA, we would love to hear from
you. Here's what you need to do:

(1) Organise for someone to film you on their digital camera, camcorder,
smart phone, tablet, or PC.

(2) Ask the camera operator to place the camera on a steady surface so
it doesn't wobble around too much, if possible.

(3) If filming on a smart phone or tablet, please place the screen
horizontally while filming as this will work better with the final
product than a vertical shot.

(4) Record your testimonial - start by stating your name and country,
then please explain how NVDA has impacted on your life. Please be
succinct. You may speak in English or in your native language. If you
speak in your native language, it is a bonus if you can provide us with
a written translation into English that we can use for subtitles.

(5) The bigger the file size, the better the quality, so if you can file
share your videos on a website like Dropbox.com and send us the link
that would be great. For smaller files under 25MB you may be able to
email them to us. Please email to an account we have set up especially
for this purpose: nvda.video at gmail.com
(5) we will endeavour to include as many of the testimonials as possible
within reason.

Thank you so much for your support. Please stay tuned for news about our
soon-to-be-created Youtube channel.

Please consider donating to NV Access to support NVDA's continued
development:

I've heard that an app called Pages is a good one. I have not tried it
myself. One of my friends who also has an iphone told me about it.

You can use the IPhone calander, but I
think the blind notetaker ones are much faster, so it is better for
education because you can put dates of assignments and things much
faster.

In Oregon, the NFB is the more active orgunization of the two. The ACB does
igzist but as I understand it, they are less active than the NFB is. I have
seen both orgunizations fight side by side in issues like the political
battle over the Oregon School for the Blind which we lost spectacularly.
Outside of the big issues like that one, we at the NFB of Oregon tends to
minds our own business and the ACB of Oregon usually minds their own
business.

I have been to the NFB national convention in Detroit, Michigan in 2009. The
convention was awesome! You get to learn about the latest in technology,
blindness techniques, laws that we are trying to fix or introduce, hore
stories, insparitional stories and so on. There are a zillion activities
that you get to pick from each day. You won't want to miss out on the
banquit. At the banquit, you get to hear Mark Maurer speak and see many
awards get presented. Going to one NFB convention is worth it even if you
never get to go to another one. By the way, for those Ravens fans out there,
go Ravens!!!

Hi Sarah, there is the notes app and voice memmo that you can use to take
notes that is, if you don't want to take notes on a braille note taker.
There is also the new Braille Touch app which the full version allows you to
copy and paste notes into any other app on your iphone.

I haven't heard of the office square app either. What is it and what does it
do?

I think that is the case in most states. Those who have been on this
list for a while will probably remember my positions on the two
organizations working together. Many times on this list, I tried to
suggest that the two organizations work together on issues affecting
all of us, since I thought that we were both working toward the same
goals. I argued that the internal "Civil War" 50 years ago shouldn't
affect relations between the two organizations today. As I learned
more about both organizations and what they stood for, I realized that
this could not happen anytime soon. Now, I find myself agreeing with
what NFB is for the most part doing: doing our own thing and letting
ACB do theirs. If we all can work together on some issues, I'm all for
that. But partnership is a two-way street, and unless ACB is really
willing to come together, I think we should just leave them alone. I
do know one thing for sure: although I try to stay informed about what
the ACB is doing, I personally choose the Federation.
