Julie, no problem. It sounds to me like you are very thoughtful in that you
decide your views on the merits of the specific issue, not necessarily
ideology, excellent way to think.

Thanks to everyone who offered explanations! Individually they helped a
lot, collectively I think I almost understand! I think now when I watch the
news I will be able to understand the deeper meanings and nuances that were
over my head before.

I still have no idea which category I fall into. On some issues I lean
heavily toward liberal views and on other issues I am conservative. I
strongly believe in the capacity, right and obligation for each citizen to
be as self sufficient as is possible. However I also believe that
government should facilitate that self sufficiency. for example I believe
blind people can and should work, but without laws that make it illegal for
employers to discriminate, our chances at employment would be dramatically
reduced. If there weren't laws about teaching Braille to blind kids we'd
have masses of illiterate children. Even with the laws there is still a lot
of resistance and jumping through loopholes. And as for the examples in my
initial email about parenting and allowing kids to swear, dye their hair,
wear clothes that cover and family dinners...well I allow/expect all of
those things.

Thanks again for all of your well thought out and written explanations!
Julie
