When my husband and I were first dating, he rented an apartment in the
basement of someone's house. We would have dinner at his place once a
week, so his landlord would see me come and go, but didn't really know
me. When he told his landlord he was moving out to share an apartment
with me, the landlord said something to the effect of, "I know you are
a nice person but you could do better than her". My husband was
furious and I too felt bad that I wasn't there to help ease the
situation for him, though I doubt the landlord would have said
something like that in my presence.
