I agree with Dave.  For me, I'd rather have it up to my nose rather than my
chin.  
I'm definitely a tapper and like a good long and light cane that is easy to
use.

As for two sizes of canes, I figure that it's easier to have a longer cane
and simply shorten up when necessary.

This is something that is a personal preference, to a great extent.  Most of
us in the NFB prefeer longer canes, the general consensus is to use a cane
that comes up between the chin and nose, in your case that would probably be
around 54 inches.
