Brandon,
My nbame is Marion Gwizdala. I am the president of the National
Association of Guide Dog Users (NAGDU), a strong & proud division of the
National Federation of the Blind. NAGDU has several discussion lists for
guide dog users: One of these is our national list, while some of our
affiliate NAGDU divisions have their own lists. You can join the NAGDU list
by going to NFBNET.ORG, finding the link to NAGDU, and completing the
subscription form. Also, if you let me know in which state you reside, I can
let you know if we have an affiliate division there.
I avoid making any recommendations of training programs; however, I
do recommend you choose a training program that transfers ownership upon
completion of training and that you read all the documentation/agreements
you will be expected to sign. Some programs have some very interesting
clauses in their agreements, such as the right to repossess a dog at any
time and for any reason at their sole and absolute discretion. Though this
program offers what they call ownership, this is not, by any stretch of the
definition, real ownership! HTH!
Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala, President
National Association of Guide Dog Users Inc.

Subject: [Blindtlk] Guide Dogs
Hello,
I'm wondering who on this list has guide dogs? I'm currently applying for
one through Guide Dogs for the Blind, and am curious how difficult it is
generally to get into one of these schools. How good does your mobility need
to be? I have always been told I have good mobility, but today I got lost
coming home from somewhere and it discouraged me a bit.
Also which do you think is the best school? I've heard a lot of good things
about Guide Dogs for the Blind so decided to apply there.
Thanks,
Brandon
