[Blindtlk] Making a Difference, (Cont.): Bringing the right attitude out

I'm not sure why a blind person needs disabled seating unless the blind
person has an additional mobility impairment. Even with a 110-pound dog, I
never have an issue sitting in regular seating and, if there are no seats,
standing. In fact, I generally refuse to sit in disabled seating so as to
not take a seat away from someone whose disability requires them to have
such a seat. Unfortunately, many in the general public believe that, just
because there are disabled seats, everyone who is disabled must sit there. I
once took my seat near the rear of the bus and had an African American woman
advise me that "there are seats up front for people like you!" I responded
to her, "I had the right to sit wherever I wish...isn't that what rosa
parks had to say about it?" It started a very friendly conversation about
how the civil rights movement for disabled people is very similar to that of
those fighting for racial equality.

Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala

It may not make sense to you but disabled seating is disabled seating. I'm
not going to move too far from the door, so if one's in a disabled seat, I
ask the person politely to move.
