But how would you determine if it makes the relationship even. What is even? I don't mean to be snarky, but I am wondering what you mean? The only other option is to either pay them by the hour or gas oney plus their hourly time, or say, 50 cents per mile.

When I was in Florida, there were people from my church who I got to be real good friends with who would not only bring me to church but to and from choir practice, and absolutely refused to take any payment. I don't think they were insulted, they were appreciative that I offered, but they just did it out of kindness.

Now, I have a neighbor who brings me to do errands, and she and her husband accept gas money and I will take them to breakfast or lunch, but they are more than fair. They charge me $10 to take me shopping in town, and whatever else I have to do in town, the charge stays the same. now, if I have to go further afield, like to the airport in Presque Isle, they will charge me more, but again, they go above and beyond and they are more than reasonable.

I often pay them way more than they really want to accept; then the next time I am riding with them, they won't take payment. And as many have pointed out, there are many ways you can pay. There is someone here whom I know who was paying a ride to chapter meetings by washing the car a couple of times a year for them and maybe a couple of other things, too.
