That's true, those surfaces mute noise, and snow definitely swallows sound.

I also have some uneasy feelings about clicking to locate objects even 
though I done it myself.  I would point out, though, that a cane makes very 
little
noise on carpet or on
grass, and that is often when there are not other obvious clews.  When I am 
on a hard surface, I often can hear objects by the tapping of a cane.
However, a sound source near the level of one's ears instead of
on the ground works significantly better.  It seems as though, as mentioned 
elsewhere, that some sort of electronic sound source might give us much of 
this
information in a more acceptable manner.

This does not involve "clucking" though.
