Although there is a lot of good advice given as part of this thread, I do not feel that we could really know for
certain what was happening with her machine. Did she say what type of computer it was? Do we know for sure that
there isn't a touch screen? Even an active mouse pad can cause things to happen by accident. I was also a little
confused by the reference to "airplane" mode. To my knowledge, Airplane Mode on a phone shuts off the cellphone
transmitter but not the WI-FI transmitter and receiver. I am therefore not sure why Airplane Mode would
necessarily hurt anything in her case. It could be a default setting if one doesn't have a card that uses the
cellphone network. There are any number of reasons she can't connect to the internet. One possible scenario is
that there is a key combination that turns off her wireless that she is hitting without knowing that is what is
happening. For example, on some new laptops, the function keys often default to controlling the computer rather
than being passed through to the application. One has to press function keys with the "FN" key to get them to do
their original thing. Usually a function key is assigned to turning on and off the wireless transmitter. One can
change this to restore their original operation. However, even when that is the case, one can accidentally press
FN along with a function key when one intends to press the Control key. Some machines have a physical switch or
button to turn off wireless as well. I just think we need to be careful to be sure we have all the facts before
we tell someone that all they have to do is to reinstall Windows or do a system restore.
