If it didn't keep him from doing something he should be, I don't see where it would be a problem if he did speak to her even if she didn't need his help. Fact is though, if one gets used to someone helping them, they ask for that person often.

Hello,
I do not see what the problem would be in asking for your son by name for assistance. Does the store know he is your son? Even so, as long as he is strictly assisting you just like he would any other customer, this should not be a problem. He probably should not walk over and say Hi Mom. Okay that's my two cents worth.
