[Blindtlk] An update on my Independence

To many of us this would not be a big deal, you're right, but this would
depend on what a person is coming out of, what has been expected of them in
the first place, the attitudes others have around them, most particularly
family influences and that support system.

Many people come out of a terribly protective environment,or have had no
opportunities.

Sandra, I truly wish all persons losing their sight would pick up their
lives as you did. I also believe the way different people handle losing
their sight inately shows what kind of problem-solvers they are. Are they
overcomers, whiners, or just fearful. How they handle transitioning into
blindness may show how they have always dealt with any problem-solving as
sighted persons.

I have known a few people like you who just picked up life and done what
they needed to. Too bad we can't bottle and sell that philosophy because it
is so necessary.

Judy

Yikes, Sandra. We all make our progress at our own rate. Maybe this is
someone who wasn't as courageous as you. Maybe the person was held back by
others. There are lots of reasons. Could you please exhibit some compassion
for folks rather than stomping on them with your heels? I sure would
appreciate it. We aren't all you.
Cindy

Hurray for you. Why is this a big deal? Millions of blind people do these
things every day. In 1973 just months after loosing my sight I had taught
myself Braille, was traveling independently, graduating from high school and
setting out as featured soloist on an all American Youth concert choir tour
to six European countries. I became blind, picked myself up with no help
and began living an independent life. So, as I said, what's the big deal?

Dear Blindtlk Members,

I would like to give you an update on my independence. This week I ordered
and paid for my own food at the Chick Fil A on the UCF campus. I used my
student ID card to pay for my lunch. I also walked from the parking lot to
the library and found the couch that I uiually sit on. These are small
steps toward improving my independence.
