[Blindtlk] An update on my Independence

Hi Cindy,

Your point is a good one. Everyone progresses at a different pace, and what
may seem like a small step to some of us is a huge step to others.
Unfortunately, there are people who must deal with low expectations and
family members who are incredibly over-protective.
Best

Liz

Yikes, Sandra. We all make our progress at our own rate. Maybe this is
someone who wasn't as courageous as you. Maybe the person was held back by
others. There are lots of reasons. Could you please exhibit some compassion
for folks rather than stomping on them with your heels? I sure would
appreciate it. We aren't all you.
Cindy

Hurray for you. Why is this a big deal? Millions of blind people do these
things every day. In 1973 just months after loosing my sight I had taught
myself Braille, was traveling independently, graduating from high school and
setting out as featured soloist on an all American Youth concert choir tour
to six European countries. I became blind, picked myself up with no help
and began living an independent life. So, as I said, what's the big deal?

Dear Blindtlk Members,

I would like to give you an update on my independence. This week I ordered
and paid for my own food at the Chick Fil A on the UCF campus. I used my
student ID card to pay for my lunch. I also walked from the parking lot to
the library and found the couch that I uiually sit on. These are small
steps toward improving my independence.
