I had an ideas for all of you interested in sewing. We do have a crafters
division, I know sewing can be a craft, hobby or possibly a profession.

Joyce Kane is the president

Their talk list is

They have their own website Monthly Chats and more.

This is becoming a fast growing division.

We all like to let others know what we have out there for interested people,
whether it is jobs, travel, guide dogs, cooking, and more!

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can have the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.

Judy,

You know a load more about sewing than I do! I think pins work better with
typical fabrics. The stuff I'm sewing is very, very heavy. Pins would make
it bunch and not lie right, making it difficult to sew. The binder clips
work great. I am sewing nylon webbing into guide dog harnesses, leashes and
collars. I have also sewn heavy duty bags, like the reusable sort for
groceries and other more craft oriented projects, rather than sewing
clothing. I don't know if the binder clips would work on your basic
fabric. I think it might be too thin and the clips too heavy to make it
practical.

Thank you for adding those, I use them too, but forgot to mention them. I
especially like your paper clip idea. How does that compare to pins for
you?

I sew, but mostly with nylon webbing, for craft projects and the occasional
clothing repair. I have sewn with a machine, but mostly I sew by hand. My
machine isn't equipped to go through the heavy materials I'm generally
using. I don't know of any books. If you have specific questions, I'd be
happy to share my techniques. Here's a few off the top of my head things
that might help:
I store the various colors of thread in plastic sandwich bags and label the
bags with the color.
I use binder clips, those heavy duty paper clip thingys, to hold pieces
together for hand sewing.
You can have a reader staple your cloth measuring tape along all the 1 inch
markings, making it into a tactile measuring tape on the cheap.

HTH and happy sewing!
Julie
