Sometimes suspicion, or at least caution is necessary. I, personally haven't paid for a background Check when Google does a pretty decent job if you know how to look. I met a seemingly nice man, who when I looked him up, was on the sex offender registry and had a wife. So yes, it's just common sense to find out if a potential partner is a decent human being before you put yourself in their hands. 
Good luck Robin, please tell us how it goes if you meet him. Most people really are just looking to find happiness, and not out to get you.
