[Blindtlk] [Blindly] Just Venting!

The message below mine provides really excellent advice. I would add to this to start to make a few lists:
1) What are you good at (e.g., think about any different skills you have, no matter how simple or complex they may be). IN today's society there is always a place where you can fit in that does not necessarily have to be becoming a rehab councilor unless that is where your heart and passion are located!
2) What do you enjoy doing (this does not need to be work-specific, nor does it need to be blindness-specific, though both can be valuable to include). Just list all things you like to do.
3) What do you hate to do. Same as 2 above.
4) What are you bad at (e.g., what are you not able to do no matter how hard you try). This can be blindness-specific or quite general so do not worry about fitting this to one particular situation.
5) If you could have your dream job (if you could be paid for doing something that would not feel like work to you, what would that be).
All of these can be any length. Thus, do not stress yourself by setting limits or worrying that you do not have enough items on any of the lists.
Now, go through the lists and see if there are things that might work together (in terms of 1, 2, and 5) or easily be avoided (in terms of 3 and 4 above).
Next ask yourself if there is any way or any type of job you could do (it can be an everyday ordinary job or something really unique) that fits with the above.
By using the above, this will help begin leading you to figure out what types of jobs you might really be suited for.
The other thing that you might consider doing is taking a career assessment test which can often tell you jobs that you never thought of that you might be a great fit for and those that would be valuable for you to avoid. Sometimes these tests can really surprise you by leading you to a dream job you never even thought about but end up loving (that has nothing to do with blindness at all or perhaps has everything to do with it).
Finally, remember that VR councilors are there to provide support and help you to ensure you have services needed to do whatever job you choose and ensure you are able to be a valuable and contributing member of society. Their job is not and should never be to force you into any specific type of job. if this is what is happening, than you might consider alternative routes to finding jobs such as a job placement office which can help you out as well and find jobs that might be suited to your skills.
Finally, do not forget about home-based work. You may have already thought of this option, but there are plenty of positions that as long as you have the proper skills or training, you can do from home. For example, consulting, coaching, medical transcription, book keeping just to name a few. If you choose this route, just be careful as there are a lot of scams out there so avoid the envelope stuffing for $1000 per day jobs as these are typically serious scams.
Hope this helps a little!
Have peace and my prayers are with you in this search,
Chris

Dnielle, maybe you should actually visit with the Louisiana Center about how you might justify it. Also, don't just go after every little thing. I have not read all of this, but what does your heart want to do? Have you investigated the feasibility of it?
Cindy
So when you say agency for the blind I am assuming you mean Voc Rehab.
Been there done that. I got a Bachelorthen was working on a Master's when it all fell apart. I could continue though after further review of the program I realized I was probably in the wrong program like there is a difference between M. Ed. and M.A. Anyway, I have forgotten why I chose that and what it actually is good for. Went back to them for another bachelor and also to buy some time to get myselftogether and work on paying some student loans but they didn't pursue. I could try the BEP program which my ex used to do and it seems everyone feels that is a good fit for me but it isn't and I fear yet another failure beyond my control. I would stay at Affiliated Blind of Louisiana (ABL) for that. I would be alright workingfor someone already in the program though since I had some experience before. How do I find that out thougheven though THAT IS NOT my cup of tea.
I get the impression though that once more and again we are back to being led toward certain acceptable programs like BEP and VOC Rehab.
Why does the agency do that and why do we have to go along with it? Of course, VR counseling is an option, but I know sighted folk definitely get hired in that role without a qualifying Masters degree. I got 5 on it I couldn't though. And yes, I been through the STEp program at LCB but don't know how to justify going through the Adult Program.
Thanks Everyone,
Danielle
P.S. And with all this constant hacking I'm experiencing, I am led to think someone might be in need of training but unable or more likely unwilling to go somewhere and doing something about me so it is easier to harass and shush me to cover up. I could be wrong though. Just my thoughtful quiet observation. That or I'm just the wrong target in a whole lot of confusion.
