I think you already answered your own question. *smile*  You are 
uncomfortable with it, see no good reason it will be helpful and see reasons 
why it doesn't work for you.  Trust your gut and do what feels right.

I have never used a cane in that way or had it suggested to me to do so. 
Generally at a corner I hold the cane vertically  in my standard just 
hanging out position.  when I'm ready to go I extend the cane in a way 
consistent with regular use.   If the street is particularly busy I will 
pause after extending the cane, maybe half a second, then go.

What I'd really like is for drivers to follow standard traffic laws...you 
know just simple things like not running red lights, not going the wrong way 
on a one way.  My closest calls with traffic have been in those exact 
situations.  And both happened when I was halfway across the street.   If 
they can't see me in the middle of the street as a pedestrian, I don't think 
the addition of the cane or dog was going to make any difference.
