[Blindtlk] Keeping House Independently

Hello Christine:

I do everything myself and I am totally blind. I do not use a broom. Many
blind people find using a broom and dust pan difficult because you cannot
always tell where your pile of dirt is and it tends to fly all over the
place, especially with all the golden retriever fur my guide dog leaves
around the house. The Swiffer dry sweeping cloths will help this because
the dirt and dust clings to the cloth. I use a Swiffer or dust mop on the
tile floors. The Swiffer Wet Jet does a good job of cleaning the tile
floors too. It has a fresh clean smell and does not make the floor too
slippery. I also often use my Hoover Dirt Devil on my tile floors as well
as the carpets. It automatically adjusts it's settings so it can go from
tile floor to the carpet and back again as I move around the house. I start
at one end of the house and work my way across each room moving over
gradually until I have covered the entire floor. This may sound strange
but, I always do my floors in my bare feet so I can reach out and feel that
I have successfully gotten an area clean. I started this when a back injury
prevented me from constantly bending over to feel the floor. There is
nothing wrong with having someone come in if it fits into your household
budget. Many sighted people hire a cleaning person. It comes down to what
is comfortable for you.

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to get your opinion about keeping house independently. I used
to have someone come in once a month just to help with things I may have
missed, but I am debating whether to do this still or not. I did get some
rehab training with cleaning, but I am not the best at it. My main hangup is
using a broom, as I just canâ?Tt figure out how it is done. I just invested
in a Swiffer so I hope that helps.

I was wondering if you keep house independently, or if you have someone
sighted come in once in a while to make sure things are kept nicely and are
not dirty. Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Christine
