I bet they are using speakerphone. If they move too far away from the phone, it is very hard to hear them.

I've also noticed that if her phone number is under somebody else's name like my parents have separate cell phone numbers. Unless I actually can get into contacts as dad cell phone and mom cell phone, it doesn't recognize parents mobile one and parents Mobile two.
