I think this is because all the messages from someone are grouped in a conversation. Personally, I don't like that style, but it seems to be popular. You can see everything, or at least on my phone you can, if you open up the whole conversation. Plus, the editbox to reply is at the very bottom of the screen on the lefthand side.

Are use the Facebook and messenger apps to. Their somethings that are more difficult, but it doesn't always read comments and allow you to comment back. With voiceover if a person or feed puts out more than one post at the same time it will say something like "you have for posts from Justin Williams" but it won't allow you to easily read them both one right after another. It's hard to explain. Maybe somebody else has a better way.
