[Blindtlk] Having Sleepovers with Sighted Friends

I attended a school for the blind, and most of my friends were blind. If we
were going to sleep at a friend's house for the weekend, we had to have
written permission from that student's parents, and from the parents of the
student who was invited over. On quite a few occasions during vacations, I
was able to sleep over at a friend's house and vise versa, but yes, the
parents had to meet each other and talk first.

Hello, Roanna. I never got to do a sleepover if my parents did not know or
at least did not get to meet the family I would stay with. As far as I know,
blindness had nothing to do with this. People who stayed at my house usually
had to meet my parents first, and it was always clear that the answer as to
yes or no would not be forthcoming in the meeting. In other words you
couldn't pressure them into it.

I guess the question I come away with is whether you ever had sleepovers and
whether your parents suggested blindness had anything to do with it.

Dear Members,

I hope all of you are doing well. The subject of this email stems from an
incident that happened when I was in sixth grade.
A sighted friend from my chorus class invited me to a sleepover that she was
having on a weekend. When I went home after school, I asked my mom if she
would allow me to go to a sleepover that weekend, and she said no. I sat on
our rocking chair and cried for a while. I was sad that I couldn't go to
this sleepover at my friend's house. However, I understand that my parents
didn't know my friend or her family. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this
topic.
