[BlindTlk] Unbelievable

Hi Laz, David, and all,

Please forgive me for inserting my opinion here--I recognize that it
might be overstepping boundaries, but as a perpetual student I'm
always trying to learn from my own mistakes and those of others. I do
believe that, unless something has changed since last I checked,
calling someone "numb-minded" and "cowardly" is both highly insulting
and extremely unprofessional. And trust me, I know all about being
unprofessional--I'm a college student after all. :) Furthermore, and
I'm surprised this wasn't slightly more obvious, there is most
certainly a threat in the sentence "I don't think you'd like it if I
found out who you are." Now we could argue semantics all day about the
intent behind that sentence etc. etc. but whether you like it or not,
there was at the very least an implied threat there. As someone who is
aspiring to pursue something related to communications and/or
journalism, I am always considering the implied meaning of my words as
well as the obvious ones. I suggest you do the same. This is a public
listserv, one that people from the public may be able to see the
messages from. The mission of the NFB is to ensure that blind people
are given fair treatment and that we are perceived as equal to our
sighted counterparts. Messages like that certainly seem to further the
perception that blind people are unaware of social skills. And as with
all communications of any form of social media, and I use the term
lightly, various studies have found that one's imagined audience is at
least four or five times smaller than one's real audience. So even
though that was addressed to a listserv, it's almost definite that
others have seen it or will see it. Furthermore, using threatening
and/or unprofessionally insulting language on a listserv will, in my
opinion, only increase the likelihood that removal requests be made,
since such conduct is, quite frankly, thoroughly inappropriate. Please
keep that in mind. Thank you!

Best,
