[BlindTlk] Stereotypes

Stereotypes directly affect us as blind people because, We, as any other
minority group, work to break from them by consistent public education and
interaction.

Human beings have this tendancy to compartmentalize, then generalize, in
order to understand. When these processes lead to wrong conclusions, that
is when stereotyping becomes negative, and even harmful.

Public stereotyping has directly harmed blind persons in the area of
employment, since we are an underemployed population.

Subject: [BlindTlk] Stereotypes

I have a student with a visual impairment who is working on a project for
social studies regarding stereotypes. He would like to get feedback from the
NFB community about how stereotypes have affected them personally (because
of his age he cannot e-mail the listserv directly). He will share the
feedback he receives in a PowerPoint presentation for his 7th grade social
studies class. This is his question:

In what ways do you think stereotypes about blind people have affected you
throughout your life?

Thank you so much for your help in advance!
