Hello,

I would love to hear from anyone who is in the medical field, front desk,
regarding how you handle walk-in emergencies.

I have a job interview Friday working switchboard, which is located at the
front desk of the hospital, just yards from the front door.

When I was called for my interview today, the person on the other end of the
line was greatly relieved that I could work the shifts they need.

I told her I was blind, and, either that didn't seem to bother her, or she
was still in shock and didn't have time to react hahaha! In any case, I
told her that I obviously could handle the front desk, since I retired from
my position with the state, having similar duties.

The one question she asked, though, is, if you couldn't see a walk-in, how
would you determine if it were an emergency?

Thinking off the top of my head, I told her there are all sorts of clues one
cam pick up on that aren't visual. The breathing, stress in the voice,
maybe an uneven gait. I also just thought of simply asking, "Is this an
emergency for you?"

I also told her that if I were wrong and it turned out not to be an
emergency that it would be better to err on the side of providing
appropriate patient care.

The call ended with both of us looking forward to the interview Friday.

By the way, I am retired, but would like the extra parttime income, and this
job seems like it would be such a good fit for me.

I also have the support of theWA Dept. Of Blind Services, and spoke with my
counselor today, whom I really like and trust.

Would love to have you guys' ideas, especially if anyone is working in this
field and has firsthand experience.

Thanks in advance.

Judy
