[BlindTlk] UNACCEPTABLE! Ross Employees Refuses To Help Blind Man Shop Because Of "Policy" | The Blind Advocate

This is definitely a possibility although I have called ahead at Walmart,
and it worked out in my favor. I think if a store is busy when someone
requests assistance, they can simply say we can help in ten minutes, 20
minutes, or whatever the time frame is.

On the otherhand, although I understand planning, sighted people who come
in to shop don't have to call ahead, and, for other reasons, may also need
some customer assistance. To my way of thinking, calling ahead may give
whoever happens to answer the phone to refuse you service before you even
get in the door.

Sherri, I think you are right. I have been extremely fortunate here and
elsewhere about getting help, and I usually have a friend come with me and
help me. Otherwise, when necessary, I have called stores to find out if
personnel are available to help. Nevertheless, if this account is accurate,

this was a boneheaded move by that store to tell this man they weren't
required to help. They might have simply suggested that in the future he
call beforehand. Wow, there are other things I could say about this, but
I'll keep that private because it might sound inflammatory. But a really
dumb business move on the part of that store if that indeed is what
happened.

In my opinion, it's always good to call in first and make sure they have
staff that can help. This time of year, the stores get very busy. Just a
thought.
