Hi all,
The document states that they are suing the IRS for not providing notices in alternative formats, including braille, large print, electronic documents or audio.
They aren’t demanding braille. They are saying that documents should be made available in one of numerous alternative formats that a blind person could access.
I can’t imagine how a blind person can take issue with that request.
The Social Security Administration provides it’s blind customers with a print copy of correspondence and has an option for clients to put a permanent request in place to also receive the letter in an alternative format. Braille is one, but I believe audio is also an alternative.
If one government department can do this, clearly it is possible for other government departments to do the same.
The ADA has been around for a long time. Why are we still having to argue about being provided important documents in an alternative format. We know braille isn’t the answer for all blind people, but nobody is asking just for braille. They are suing for alternative format choices. Braille is just one of several requested choices.
best,
Heather
