[BlindTlk] Cell phone

Hi, Bob,

My husband is one who only wants to talk and text, and he has the Kyocera
Duraxe. It is a rugged military-grade phone, water resistant, a flip phone
with voice guidance. It runs off a custom Android. He only talks and
texts, but the phone can do e-mail, plus get online. I think it is 8 GB
internal memory, but there is SD card slot, I believe up to 64 GB if you
want it. It has an external battery. The outside of the phone has a nice
leather texture about it.

If memory serves, we had to have sighted assistance to go into the settings,
accessibility, and turn on the voice from there, and I had that done right
at the AT&T store.

If your provider does not carry the Kyocera Duraxe, you can purchase a
factory unlocked and new from either Amazon or Ebay. This is how I have
purchased many of my phones.

The network is GSM, and I don't believe Verizon uses that, if you are a
Verizon ustomer. They run on CDMA, as overseas, but would be worth checking
if you are a Verizon customer.

If you are shopping for a flip phone, let your carrier know that you are
looking for a flip phone, physical buttons with TTS, or Text To Speech.
People get confused with TTY, for the deaf. We need TTS. This is how I
found out about the Duraxe. The customer service person started checking
flip phone specs for the phones they had in store and found TTS on this
Kyocera Duraxe..

You can also navigate through all the menus with the TTS voice, which is not
TalkBack, but still very clear, a female voice.

Gary, I am, believe it or not, a dos user. I have a simple flip phone
from Sprint. It probably won't work all that much longer. I'd like to
get a phone with buttons that I can text on, but I'm not interested in an
iphone. Can you tell me about what you have, and its ease of operation?
I am not good with technology.

Thank you so much.

Bob in NY
