James,

I am sure he means the Apple iPhone but I'm not sure where the confusion might be. However, there are different models of the iPhone, all of which have the ability to talk. In addition to different models, there are different versions over the years as well. Besides changing the operating system, the actual hardware in the iPhone has changed over the years as well. You mentioned that you could get an iPhone 4S very cheaply. It is cheap because it is incredibly old, and even some current iPhone applications won't likely run on it. You can save money by not buying the newest iPhone, but I think that one is too old to be a good investment. While certainly a more expensive phone is hard to afford, remember that over time you are going to pay more for the service plan than you are likely going to pay for the phone, so the phone is only one part of the cost.

The Apple iPhones work using an operating system called IOS. This is similar to the role Windows plays on a computer. The VoiceOver screen reader is only available on iPhones and other Apple devices. Android is another operating system used by other brands of phones. Unlike IOS, many brands of phones use Android. The accessibility features built into Android are said by some to be less stable than those built into the iPhone, but I don't have personal experience with Android so do not know how true it is. There are a few Android phones that still have physical buttons that let you do some functions, but the iPhones do not have buttons. Whether the buttons that some of these Android phones have do enough to be worthwhile is not something that can easily answered. Many people adjust to using a touch screen with the help of VoiceOver on the iPhone pretty well while it is a struggle for others.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

OK, please forgive my ignorance, but I'm trying to learn. What is an
Iphone? Is that simply a particular model of either an iPhone or an
Android, or is it a third option all together?

I recommend the Iphone. It is the most accessible. Also, you
might be able to get one from your state.

Dear friends,

OK, I am going to be trying to enter into this century, at
least as far
as telephones go! LOLL I can use your help!

I need to get a smart phone for work. But like so many
others, I have a
limited financial budget. I need the phone for calls of course,
but that is
actually somewhat secondary. I mainly need it so that I can
learn about the
wide range of aps out there that are especially helpful for the
blind. So
my main question is this, I can get an affordable price on the
following
phones: Sky Devices 5.0Q 8GB 3G/4G Android 4.4 Unlocked $79.99,
and the
iPhone 4S 8 GB $99.00. Are either of these phones a particularly
good
choice for me to start my smart phone journey on? Also, are they
something
that will serve me well, or will I be frustrated and out of date
very
quickly. Are they like getting a computer with an OS of Windows
5? I tend
to be more interested in the iPhone, but is this one a great deal
different
from those that were just released? Like I said I need this for
work, so I
want to make the right choices.

Thank you so much for your help!

Respectfully,
James
