[BlindTlk] Cell phone

Is the back key the thing that looks like a little square rubber tile above
the part of the long button that would be the end button? I think I
discovered that that deletes the last character, but I don't remember if it
talks. It might. That saves me if I catch the mistake I've just made. But
I run into trouble if I don't catch the mistake until later. I was missing
a digit in somebody's phone number when I put it in contacts, and it took me
about a half an hour to figure out how to fix the mistake, because I
couldn't figure out where the cursor, I guess you would call it, was. It
was at the beginning of the line. But it would have been easier if it
spoke! Pam.

Pamela,
You have probably already done what I would do, and you might be right that
the signal strength might be in the part of the menu that does not work.
One thing I remember was that I did get speech feedback when pressing the
"BACK" key which functioned like a BACKSPACE when typing text. That isn't
as good as ARROW keys, but at least I only had to retype what came after my
error. See if that helps at all.
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

It would be interesting if you could find signal strength, because I have
been all through the menus and don't find it. Unless it is in that part
that doesn't talk that I, and everybody else who has this phone, sometimes
gets stuck in. I think this is a 4g phone, but I was looking, last night,
and can't seem to find it. I thought I could. I have looked at all the
information, but actually didn't find it; the phone didn't say it. Also,
another thing that is annoying with this phone is, that if you text, or put
contacts in, it doesn't speak everything. With the Nokia with mobile speak,
I could right and left arrow through what I wrote and fix any mistakes.
When I write, it speaks, but if I make a mistake, I can't make it speak with
the left and right arrows to find out where I am, and where the mistake is.
Pam.

Subject: Re: [BlindTlk] Cell phone
Pamela,
I thought there was a way to read the signal strength but believe it is
buried in a menu like the battery level. I still have our Alcatel phone
here although it can't completely connect to a wireless network so don't
know if I can find the signal strength indication. I probably still have
the manuals around, though, if you would like me to dig a little.
In my mind, what is a smart phone is kind of at the center of this
discussion. The Alcatel can do many things. The screen reader is
reasonably functional, but we found it to be so slow at times that we didn't
think it responded to a command when it eventually did. In my experience,
there just was no way to just query the phone screen for information. To
get information, one had to figure out how to use the menu structure to
"fool" the built-in screen reader to speak what one wants to hear. In my
experience, the Alcatel had many of the disadvantages of a smarter phone
such as an Android phone without any of the advantages, particularly a more
robust screen reader. It made me realize that simply looking for a less
powerful flip phone might not be the ideal answer that would seem to be the
case on the surface. I think that someone who gets real comfortable with
the Alcatel flip phone would find it very possible to use an Android phone,
especially one that has physical buttons. I know another individual who has
the Odin phone, which I don't think is being sold any more. It had
additional capabilities beyond being just a phone, but a good deal of
thought went into the screen reader. The voice was very clear, and it
seemed to have a pretty manageable set of menus. I believe it was created
specifically for blind people, but it used an older network protocol which
has less support. Many have pleasant memories of the Nokia phones, too. I
just think we are in a time where the landscape is very complex regarding
phones, and the options are not necessarily easy to categorize.
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

Yes, it does, but I can't do everything I want. Like I said in the last
message, I haven't found out how to add ringtones. But I also don't have a
way to check signal strength. The Nokia n95 I had before that that had
Kurzweil and mobile speak on it, said on the opening screen, how many bars
of battery I had, and how many bars of signal I had, besides the phone and
the screenreader, I think, and the phone company. This phone makes you go
into a submenu to get the battery level, which it says in percentages, and
there is no way to find signal strength. You can go on line and also do
email with this phone. You can also put music and videos on it. It also
has a calculator. But I don't think it's a smart phone. I'm not sure what
makes it not a smart phone, though. I am confused about what actually makes
a phone a smart phone. Pam.

Hi Again, Pam,
I forgot to ask, if you have this flip phone, does it have screen reader
capability and what all can you do with it?

The Alcatel flip phones have a membrane that looks like rubber tiles. You
can feel that there are buttons underneath when you push on the tiles. Pam.

One thing I don't like about phones with physical keys is in an
accident, those keys can fall out and won't be easy to find. Probably a
membrane over physical keys with membrane having concavities to
accommodate physical keys in up positions would take care of that
problem but with the myriad options available in all of these years I've
not read about that one.
