This really works and it is fun. When I first encountered this technique, it
was called Russian Peasant Multiplication.

Subject: [BlindTlk] neat math trick
For multiple digit multiplication beyond times tables range and for counting
numbers.
Originally known as Egyptian Multiplication.
Write two multiplicands on a line and this is best done on paper.
First multiplicand gets divided by two with remainders thrown away all the
way down to zero in its column.
Second multiplicand gets doubled until the last number is on the line with
the zero from the first multiplicand.
Every line with an even number in the first column gets erased.
Finally add up every number in the second column for your answer.
