[BlindTlk] Fw: The Meaning of Independence?

I agree that that is narrow, and I think it's more complicated than to say
after a while you are all set. I don't mean this to be a tough response,
although it might sound like it. We are all at different levels, and I
think it can take a long, long, time for some of us to achieve the level of
independence we might want to achieve. And I also think our sense of what
true independence is may change over time. For example, some of us go
through this rebellious, angry independence in which nobody can stand to be
around us. Hopefully we mature to a sense of quiet confidence about
ourselves which allows us to accept help when necessary, but also allows us
to make informed choices about when to do so and when not to do so. For
example I will courteously ask for help when traveling through bustling,
crazy airports like Washington Dulles. I've even heard sighted folks get
frustrated with that facility. But, because of my mobility skills, I can
travel safely and independently in either my small town or in a big busy
city like New York or Chicago.

That’s pretty narrow. I don’t know any sighted person that has that kind of
independence.
