[BlindTlk] Drano and Independence

Hi,

Good points. If this is an oil clog, the hot water will help. If I have oil go down my drain, I follow it with a heavy Dawn detergent chaser along with hot water.

Jen,\

If it is a removable screen, make sure there is nothing trapped underneath it. Also, a plunger would be worth a try. Once you have the drain clear, try running hot water for a minute or so down the drain once a day and see if that might help prevent a buildup.

If you are using Drano in standing water, finding the drain by feeling with the bottle before turning it over completely would probably do well enough. If a little gets in the standing water while you are positioning the bottle, it will get to the drain eventually.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I have standing water in the kitchen sink. These clogs only happen about every six months. I have a drain screen over the drain to protect it.

Jen,

What sort of an issue are you having? Are you dealing with a garbage disposal or a regular drain? Is it a kitchen sink, a bathroom sink or a bathtub drain? I have used Drano now and then and frankly it has never done much good for me. Certainly being careful with it is in order. Those very thin gloves that are used by food preparation people should protect your hands and you can still feel pretty well through them. Even putting a baggie over your hand while guiding the bottle would give you pretty good protection. However, for the most part, if you were to have a bowl of water set out in advance that you could use to quickly rinse your hand if you did spill a little on them would also provide you some protection.

Often, though, you can avoid using something like Drano by using a plunger instead. Using a crystal drain product may also help but feel safer. Mostly, getting the crystals on your hand is not a problem as long as you wipe them off right away and your hands are dry. Some say the crystals don't work as well, though.

Also, making sure that the drain is clear of any obstacles just by using your fingers is often enough. In a kitchen sink, a little food that is in the drain but underneath the part that has the plug will slow everything down. If you have a bathtub drain with a sort of screen, Picking at any hair you can reach will sometimes clear things up enough to allow water to drain again.

Finally, if this is a problem that repeats often, you should consider whether there is something else that you can change to avoid the problem. Be careful what food you put down the drain in the kitchen, throwing it in a garbage can instead. If you pour any kind of grease down the drain such as after frying bacon or even hamburger, be sure to run a lot of hot water right after for a minute or two. It will keep the grease more in a liquid state and allow it to run further down the drain so it won't block anything up. Ideally, you should not have to deal with this kind of a problem very often, and particularly if you are in an apartment, it may be a building wide problem.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I still haven't tried putting Drano in the kitchen sink independently yet - I'm too nervous. Maybe I'll try tonight. Or keep looking for a coat hanger.

Second keep in mind Draino can’t be used in some places like bathtubs and toilets. There is specially formulated stuff for hair clogged drains. The company called Whink makes some great stuff. It is calledW-H-I-N-K . Pay attention there to the spelling. Most places like Home Depot, ACE Hardware all have it. I buy it at Menards here in WI. Third remember you can hear most od what’s going on. Pay attention. Fourth, before using a product get and follow directions to the Y and don’t expect it to fix the problem first pir so plan accordingly. Possible independently ways to obtain info: wensite search for product, AIRA, Seeing AI just to name a few.
