Hello,
There are lots of types of sandwich makers, and sorry to hear you burned
your fingers. The immediate thing to do is to soak them in cold or ice
water for a few minutes. That immediately lowers skin temp, giving you a
less severe burn.
I don't know of any cook who hasn't burned in some way, but it gets you to
practicing safety.
I've been cooking so long now that I've developed techniques that work, yet
sjill have to be aware of safety and prevention.
For instance, when I am using our portable grill, I'm aware of where it is.
You can use a fork to locate the surface, and place it where you want the
edge of your sandwich to go.
You could also place your prepared sandwich on a plate or large spatula,
locate your hot area, position the plate and slide the sandwich onto the
hot surface.
The more you cook, you will develop safe techniques that work for you.
Another thing I just thought of is to put your sandwich on the cool
surface, then heat it up.
To remove the sandwich, slide a spatula underneath it and your fingers on
the top of it, or using a mit covering those fingers if the top surface of
the sandwich is really hot. Have the plate right next to the maker for ease
of serving.
The more you cook, some of these things will come second nature.
