When I learned handwriting, I started with crayons paper, and a screen. I got better after I learned to use an Optacon. When I taught it, I used the Marks method, which describes it using the braille cell as a basis for the letters.

Hi Judy, likely in the Futura Italic Font the upper-case J is made that way.  My reason for that is that people who didn't know my name and saw the writing got my name correct.  I haven't googled the system or contacted Lions World International about it either.  Last contact I had with them was once I got employed and had been employed for a while.
Apparently I was one of their success stories.
